| What are the fees for SIMS?
Graduate students who qualified as residents of California are required to pay $4,268.50 in fees for the academic year 2000-01. Nonresidents are required to pay the nonresident tuition plus fees, for a total of $14,702.50 for the academic year 2000-01. (Nonresidents, for purposes of registration, are those who have not been legal residents of California for more than one year immediately before the opening day of the semester for which they register. Legal residence is a combination of physical presence and the intention of making the state one's permanent home, coupled with the relinquishment of legal residence in any other state.) A number of fellowships and graduate scholarships are offered on the Berkeley campus, open to all graduate students by competition. Other fellowships and graduate scholarships are restricted to students in particular fields of study. The School of Information Management and Systems has available a number of fellowships for masters and doctoral students. Applicants interested in applying for fellowship assistance must complete Part C of the application. Fellowships normally are awarded only for the first year of study, but a number of student research, teaching and reader appointments are available to qualified students. Inquiries about availability of student appointments should be made directly to the School of Information Management and Systems at the time of enrolling in the fall. All fellowships and many student research appointments are awarded for the nine-month academic year beginning with the fall semester. Fellowships for First Year Students: SIMS has some fellowship support available for entering masters students and to doctoral students from endowments and alumni contributions that are made to the School. A select number of entering students are awarded merit-based fellowships each year that usually cover University fees and/or non-resident tuition where applicable. Typically, a majority of the admittees receive some kind of fellowship assistance during their first year of study. In addition, a smaller number of students are awarded a stipend, usually not exceeding $10,000 per year. Fellowship Support for Continuing Students: Fellowship support for continuing students (past the first year of study) is primarily awarded to doctoral students to fund their ongoing degree work. Many students find School-related or campus jobs to finance their continuing education. Campus Wide Fellowship Awards: The University awards through competition a limited number of merit-based fellowships for study particularly at the doctoral level. See University Fellowships for further information. Other Fellowships: Professional societies and other groups often provide scholarship support for entering and continuing students in particular disciplines. (They will be listed here when they become available). Graduate Division/Campus Fellowship Information
