Spring 2006

Course Description

Two hours of lecture per week. Some Lab time. This course teaches the project management essentials that allow you to lead or function comfortably in a project environment. Case studies, personal experience and real-world projects will be used to demonstrate tools and techniques. Our approach emphasizes flexibility, communication and recognition of how external factors impact project management.

A sampling of topics covered:

  • Understanding project lifecycles: waterfall, iterative, etc.
  • Structuring a project to succeed
  • How to know when you're in trouble
  • Critical activities in all project phases
  • Working with what you have and what they want

This course is appropriate for both 1st and 2nd-year MIMS students, and for students from other departments with an interest in understanding project dynamics or project leadership. This course satisfies the requirement for a project management course.
