Both were based on SGML, an elaborate metalanguage for marking up documents with nested tags so that their contents can be managed. But while HTML is a single language for laying out web pages, XML is another metalanguage (a streamlined version of SGML) that you can use to tag and manage essentially any form of information for electronic storage and networked use.
