How will SIMS help further my career?

Job placement is handled on this campus through the Career Center. Specific representatives will work with SIMS students through group workshops and individual meetings. The Career Center will sponsor guest speakers series to inform students about available career options.

Competencies acquired in the MIMS program

Information professionals graduating with a MIMS degree from the School of Information Management and Systems at UC Berkeley are expected to possess the abilities to:

• Design, develop and provide information services
  • Locate, evaluate, analyze and synthesize information;
  • Serve as an information mediator between information systems and users;
  • Manage information service centers and libraries;
  • Train others in the selection, use and evaluation of information;
• Organize information
  • Develop and maintain classification, cataloging, retrieval and indexing systems;
  • Work with knowledge domain experts to develop, maintain, and use classification systems;
  • Design, implement, and evaluate systems for the organization and storage of information;
  • Design and evaluate software for the organization for the storage, display, and dissemination of information resources;
• Measure and evaluate user needs and information seeking behavior
  • Design and utilize usability measurement tools;
  • Assess, measure and evaluate customer satisfaction;
  • Measure and assess the impact of information on organizational decision making;
  • Measure and evaluate effectiveness of information services and products;
  • Design interfaces that meet users' needs;
  • Protect privacy and security of data;
• Design, develop, manage, and evaluate information systems
  • Design and manage database management systems;
  • Develop, design, and manage web sites;
  • Design middleware to integrate database management and Web-based delivery of information;
  • Develop software for management and presentation of information;
  • Perform systems analysis operations;
  • Formulate, analyze, and evaluate information policy;
  • Design, develop, and maintain information networks;
  • Maintain security for information networks and systems;
• Manage intellectual property rights for the organization and users

SIMS and accreditation

Since SIMS is the first school in the US focused explicitly on information management in digital environments, there are no appropriate accrediting organizations or standards. See the discussion of accreditation in the Proposal for a School of Information Management and Systems. It is possible that the School will seek accreditation from various organizations in the future, should this prove advantageous, but applicants should not count on this happening in the near term.
