What are some opportunities in information management and systems?

The first step in applying information technology is to automate what has come before. This can result in some quantitative advances (amount of information, speed of access, etc.). However, major advances in information management will arise from:

  • re-examining the balance between the technological and social components,
  • rethinking the organization of information, technology, and people, and
  • re-evaluating processes and protocols.

Distributed and computer-mediated information access can increase the opportunities for groups to more effectively leverage information in their collaborative activities. Distributed and computer-mediated information management can also play an increasingly positive role in communities and the political life of our society.
