Reflections of Current Students

"I am constantly amazed at the diversity of student activities and our collaborative environment. SIMS students create all sorts of activities, from class projects to camping trips to holiday parties--even holidays you've probably never celebrated before! If you ask, there's bound to be a few SIMians who will gather around a plan." - Tom Selsley, MIMS 2002

"UC Berkeley is a place where a number of characteristics about a college community come together that you wouldn't expect. You're challenged in your intellectual endeavors but also have the rare situation where the weather is beautiful, there are people in the community who are well-spoken, fun, and open-minded, and you have all the benefits of one of the most desirable metropolitan areas in the country at your disposal. Berkeley really is ideal above and beyond its credentials as an institution of higher learning." - Masters Student

"Berkeley is a wonderful place to be a student. After having lived and studied in the States and in Europe, I can honestly say that the facilities and support offered here are great. SIMS offers the benefits of a professional degree without the competitive atmosphere that can be found in other professional schools. The students really learn together." - Marie-Louise Cremer, MIMS 2002

"I like living in the Bay Area because of its diversity. People are more tolerant of different ideas and cultures. In addition, the city and natural surroundings provide a good variety of entertainment and leisure. At SIMS, I enjoy the supportive culture among peers. Most people are generous and share their knowledge and time to help you." - Masters Student

Student Groups

There are a wide variety of student groups and organizations at Berkeley. For a complete list of groups, see the Office of Student Life web site. The following is a short discription of the current student groups specific to SIMS.

IMSA
Information Management Students Association, the SIMS student organization, is dedicated to promoting the awareness of SIMS and information management issues throughout the UC and professional communities.

SIMS Doctoral Forum
A Ph.D. student association representing the interests of SIMS doctoral students. For more information contact forum-admin@sims.berkeley.edu.

Sandbox
The Sandbox provides a clean, accessible, and secure computing network and storage location for SIMS students to learn and collaborate hands-on with computer hardware, operating systems, applications, peripherals, security systems, and networking gear. For more information contact sandbox-admin@sims.berkeley.edu.

Intramural Sports Teams
SIMS has two Intramural sports teams: co-rec speed soccer and co-rec volleyball. These activities bring together Masters students in their first and second years, as well as PhD students. Students enjoy playing for fun, and sometimes for a little competition. The intramurals teams offer a great way to get to know more fellow students outside of the classroom.
