Seminar Goals
Editorials and articles appear weekly in newspapers, magazines, web pages, and on the airwaves discussing topics such as Knowledge Workers, the Information Economy, Killer Apps, the Future of the Book, Data Mining, and Information Overload. The purpose of this seminar is to assess the merit, or lack thereof, of the ideas behind the hype. Informavores will be a weekly discussion of short, timely articles about ``The Information Age,'' drawing on expertise from a wide variety of disciplines. This seminar is sponsored by SIMS, the School of Information Management and Systems at UC Berkeley, one of whose goals is to create a new, multi-disciplinary understanding of issues surrounding information technology and society. Along with SIMS students and faculty we strongly encourage participation from members of departments across campus, including but not limited to economics, computer science, business, law, public policy, cognitive science.
We will primarily make use of articles that are available online in order to avoid the need to distribute papers across campus. Participants will be expected to have read and/or printed out their own copies in advance. During the course of the semester we will work out more democratic mechanisms by which the topic articles will be chosen.
