IntroductionUC Berkeley's School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) was created in June of 1995 by the UC Regents. Its mission is to train a new generation of information managers who are skilled in organizing, manipulating, and communicating information. Through its Affiliates Program, SIMS seeks to establish partnerships with leading institutions in the information industry. The goal of the program is to offer these institutions access to current research carried out at the school and to expose SIMS students to information management problems faced by industry through a summer internship program. SIMS also offers affiliates the opportunity to recruit students into career positions after graduation. Faculty and StudentsSIMS faculty represent a variety of disciplines. They pursue research in information organization and retrieval, database management, human-computer interaction, economics of information, intellectual property law, and a variety of other fields. Several faculty hold joint appointments in computer science, economics, business, and law. SIMS admits approximately 40 students per year to its two-year Masters program and 3-5 students per year to its Ph.D. program. BenefitsContact with faculty: We encourage faculty to develop informal relationships with Affiliates which may lead to more formal consulting and research collaboration. Student recruiting: We provide convenient Web access to student resumes for Affiliates interested in hiring students for summer internships and full-time career employment. See our Potential Employers page for more information. Publications: Affiliates receive faculty publications, research announcements, and other relevant materials. Conferences: Affiliates will be invited to at least two affiliates conferences per year on current topics in information management. Invitations to other related conferences and campus events will also be issued. See the Affiliates Workshop Archive for examples of conferences, workshops, and other events for SIMS Affiliates. Communication: SIMS will consult with Affiliates about their needs in order to shape the curriculum so as to produce information managers that will best meet the needs of your organization. |
