SIMS Affiliates Meeting on Human-Computer Interaction
Friday January 25, 2002
202 South Hall

HCI, known as human-computer interaction, is an interdisciplinary field involving computer graphics, operating systems, human factors, ergonomics, industrial engineering, cognitive psychology, and the systems part of computer science. HCI is a discipline concerned with the design, prototyping, and evaluation of user interfaces for computers. The focus is on interaction between one or more humans and one or more computational machines.

More specifically, HCI is concerned with the joint performance of tasks by humans and machines; the structure of communication between human and machine; human capabilities to use machines; interface technology (e.g. algorithms and programming of the interface itself); interface technology (e.g. engineering concerns that arise in designing and building interfaces); interface evaluation (e.g. the process of specification, design, and implementation of interfaces). HCI thus involves science, engineering, and design aspects.
