Network externalities

Definition:
Economists say that a network externality exists when the amount that one party is willing to pay for access to a network depends on who or how many other parties are connected to it. There is a fairly large literature on how markets and other economic institutions function in the presence of network externalities, but only a small fraction of that is online.
